Returning Students
2010-2011 Application Information
What is Ase?
Ase (pronounced “ah-shay”) is a culturally based, holistic enrichment, rites of passage program for 6- 12th grade students in the Philadelphia area. Ase offers a wide range of exciting educational opportunities, such as classes on Literature, Math, African History and Art, Business and Entrepreneurial Development, Journalism and Web Design, and much more. Ase also sponsors workshops and guest speakers to engage students on issues such as healthy living, media literacy, and preparing for college and a career. Additionally, Ase gives students the opportunity to develop their artistic abilities in areas such as African Drum and Dance, Poetry, Drama and Visual Design. Finally, and most important to the Ase model, each Ase student works with a college mentor one-on-one or in small groups, ensuring personal attention and building a strong, supportive bond. Ase consists of three separate programs: Ase Foundations (grades 6 and 7), Ase Prep (grades 8 and 9), and Ase Futures (grades 10-12).
Ase Foundations 6-7 grades
Ase Foundations is designed to lay the framework academic, cultural, and social success during the initial middle school years. In addition to the Ase curriculum, Ase Foundations students also benefit from mandatory tutoring and basic skills boot camp. Students will begin a rites of passage process, entering into a journey of self-discovery and adulthood with a community of mentors and elders to support and nurture them. Foundations is the cornerstone of Ase Academy, and is the oldest component of our program.
Ase Prep 8 and 9th grades
Ase Prep was developed to continue the rites of passage process and enhance the skills students cultivated in Foundations. Ase Prep is designed to assist 8th and 9th grade students in the transition to high school by providing early college prep exposure and critical social support for students during the transition to high school. Prep students are given increased responsibilities in the program to enhance their leadership skills as well as greater opportunities to showcase the artistic and academic skills they developed in Ase Foundations.
Ase Futures
Ase Futures gives high school students the opportunity to obtain real world experience in major career fields including Technology, Health & Medicine, Business Development, and Social Sciences. Futures students also benefit from college counseling and SAT prep work beginning in the 10th grade. Students complete their rites of passage journey by serving in an apprentice-like capacity to college students in teaching and mentoring younger Ase students. Our hope is that Future students will take their Ase experience with them into their collegiate journey and continue to participate in nurturing our next generation of leaders, scholars, and activists.
While participation in all three stages is not mandatory, it is our hope that students begin with Foundations and remain with the program until their high school graduation in order to receive the maximum benefits of the each program. Please note that the application process for new Ase Futures students is separate from the Foundation and Prep application. Please visit the website at www.aseacademy.org to download the application and for more information on all of our programs.
